Obama and Christians: What does it Mean?

Nothing.  I honestly don’t think it will amount to anything, the same way that having a Catholic President never amounted to anything.  President-Elect Obama could announce on Inauguration Day in a couple months as he swears on the Koran that he is no longer a Christian – and nothing will come of it.  It will be a media circus, people will denounce the fact that they ever voted for him…but life will go on and nothing will change.

Quite a bit has been made of Obama’s religious beliefs.  Here is a quick(ish) relatively slanted story of his journey.  An entertaining read, as I am sure many of these internetters have been looking up all the Obama information that they could.  What I find funny is this: in the last couple of elections, much was made about how “Christian” George W. Bush was.  People said that it helped swing votes in battleground states.  Fast forward four years…can you think of anything else said about GWB’s faith?  Nah.  Maybe it was because of all the other parts of the ship that hit the fan, but needless to say, history won’t show GWB to be a president who was a man of faith.  Even if he was.

So if Barack Obama reconnects with Christ in a way he never has before or if he decides, like mentioned in that article, that maybe it isn’t what he believes, life will go on.  His policies and decisions weren’t going to be influenced by the Gospel of Jesus anyways…who can say they ever were?  Who can say that would even be good for our country?

At this point, all we know is that the country needed change.  Obama, according to quotes I read (Can only say this because I am definitely not an expert), leans as far left as Bush leans right.  Well, ok.  But McCain made it a point that he was not George Bush.  Even Saturday Night Live made sure to drive that point home (check the 1:05 mark…and reaction by “John McCain”).  So, we have change.  We continue our run of Christian presidents in an increasing religiously diverse society.  It is going to happen in my lifetime where the president is not a Christian.  No offense to our leaders past, but I’m willing to bet that very few of them indeed practiced what they preached.  But maybe that is why Church is separated from state…and Pandora’s box is reopened.

  1. Point of interest:

A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

“Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president,” Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

“Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ’s Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation.”

How about that? A REAL Priest!

    Pachem et Bonum,
